My name is Moses Sawa Kalume. I am a philanthropist and a social entrepreneur who is passionate about using innovation and technology to create an empowering ecosystem for the Global South Communities so as to sustain their livelihoods and eradicate poverty. Through my startup, Alamos ICT Solutions, and our platform SASA International Africa, we are implementing a project with the grassroot communities in Kenya where we are leveraging AI to intersect Agriculture and Healthcare so as to mitigate climate change, attain food security, and improve healthiness among community members.

In this project, we use AI throughout its implementation. To begin with, we are building AI tools to enhance collection and interpretation of geological data such as soil formation & moisture content, depth of potential aquifers, and the soil salinity level so as to enable us make better decisions on which location to drill boreholes to get fresh water for irrigation, which crops to plant, and how to control the supply of water & nutrients to various crops in the farms. We are doing the project in a village called Vimburuni in Kilifi County, Kenya where we have access to over 100 acres of community land to be put under organic cultivation of nutritious food crops and medicinal plants mainly sweet potatoes, cassava, moringa, aloe vera, castor plant, black seed plant, ginger and turmeric. We are doing the farming by organizing grassroot community members into manageable grower’s groups who get access to centralized borehole water for irrigation and farm inputs.

Moreso, we are developing AI tools to enhance farm management activities such as guidelines for planting, pest & weed control, harvesting and post-harvesting for the various crops we are cultivating. And AI tools to automate value addition procedures for extraction, production, combination, formulation and dosage of various nutritious food products and herbal remedies such as nutritious floor, bread, dried chips, crisps, candies, cakes, oils, powder, tablets, capsule, teas and tincture from the food crops and medicinal plants we are cultivating.

We are also building AI powered mobile application for the project with the capabilities to diagnose patients remotely, prescribe medication & nutritious food products, receive orders, send notifications to our nearest affiliates and make on-premise deliveries to our end consumers around the world using drones and drone technology. We are on a mission to create a community of affiliates and agents in strategic towns and cities who will maintain stocks of our products and have access to 1 or 2 drones configured to do local deliveries within those specific towns and cities under the control of the AI powered mobile application.

In this project, we rely on AI to enhance our planning, decision making, production and delivery of our services and products to our beneficiaries and end consumers. We are designing the AI tools not to replace human labor but to complement humans by providing meaningful insights so as to increase effectiveness and efficiency in the project while reducing costs, eliminating time wastage and reducing the effort to perform various task thereby maximizing impact.
